WASTE TIN IN TO INCINERATOR BIN!
FEEL
1.LIST THE CHALLENGES OR PROBLEMS IN YOUR SURROUNDINGS(SCHOOL,NEIGHBOURHOOD,ETC) THAT BOTHERED YOU.
So many problems bothered us.
Damaged compound wall
Pollution due to plastic carry bags
Not enough space for play ground
Unavailability of an incinerator at school
2.STATE THE PROBLEM CHOSEN TO WORK AND WHY.
1. Our school has 60 girl students and among them 20 are using sanitary napkins. We have also 5 women teachers.
2. The government of Tamil Nadu is doing a great service in providing with free sanitary napkins to all the girls who need it.
2.  We do not have an incinerator to dispose of the napkins, and found this as a big problem.
3.  We put this problem along with other important problems before the students and they voted that this problem of not having an incinerator to be solved immediately.
4. The fellow male students expressed their concern over the problem. They empathetically said this problem of their ‘sisters’ affecting them too.
5. Since the girls are from rural areas they have this problem at their homes too.

3.WHO WERE THE PEOPLE AFFECTED BY THE PROBLEM?WHAT WERE THEIR PRIMARY CONCERNS?
1. All our girl students who use napkins and our female teachers.
2. Mothers and sisters at home.
PRIMARY CONCERNS
They feel ashamed during the time of using napkins, since they do not have a facility to dispose the napkins properly.
They wish to bunk classes during that time because of this.
They do not know how to overcome this.
Disposing of napkins in open places embarrasses them.
They are much concerned about the pollution, filthy smell it causes.

IMAGINE
1.LIST ALL THE DIFFERENT SOLUTION YOU CAME UP WITH.
1.Constructing a new incinerator with bricks and cement pipes.
2.Offering leave to students during that time.
3.Collecting the napkins and burning it in an open place.
4.Buying an electronic incinerator.
5.Modifying a waste tin into incinerator.

2.WHICH SOLUTION FROM THOSE LISTED ABOVE DID YOU CHOOSE TO IMPLEMENT AND WHY?
5th option was selected.
Reasons for selecting it.
We do not have enough space to construct an incinerator.
Offering leave will affect students’ academic performance.
Collecting the napkins and burning it in an open place will cause big environmental problems.
We cannot afford to buy an electronic incinerator since it costs very much.
We chose the 5th option of modifying a waste tin into incinerator since it is a low cost solution.
Also used tins are available in a shop close to our school.
We have a welder’s shop near to our school, to modify the tins.

DO
1.DESCRIBE VERY BRIEFLY THE PROCESS OF IMPLEMENTING YOUR SOLUTIONS.
We went to a used good shop and bought a medium sized tin with help of a teacher.
We welded the tin so that the lid is free to open and close. We removed the bottom and fitted with a narrow -holed grill.
We fit stands to all its four corners to erect it.
We put holes in the upper part of the tin to facilitate wind which will help burning.
We placed it in the ladies toilet.

2.WHAT WAS THE RESULT OR IMPACT OF YOUR PROJECT?
We collected napkins in the tin and let them dry.
We burnt it safely.
We collected the ash which filtered down through grill in another tin and buried it into the ground safely.
We removed the napkins in an environment friendly way.
Our girls and female teachers were relieved of their stress and embarrassment.

3.A)HOW MANY PEOPLE WERE IMPACTED BYYOUR SOLUTIONS
0-10 10-20 20-50 MORE THAN 100
ANS:20-50
B)WHAT DID THE IMPACTED PEOPLE HAVE TO SAY ABOUT YOUR PROJECT? PROVIDE 2 QUOTES OR TESTIMONIALS.
“We are entirely relived of our monthly stress of disposing of the napkins. Now we feel quiet happy and free now.”

“We do not tread our period time anymore. We learnt that we could find solutions to problems on our own. I am very eager to introduce this method to others in my neighbourhood.”

4.WHAT CHALLENGES DID YOU ENCOUNTER WHILE IMPLEMENTING YOUR PROJECT AND HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?
Students were embarrassed to talk about this problem in the beginning. They expressed this when we asked to write down the problems instead of speaking out.
They shed off their clumsiness in dealing with the problem because they considered this as a taboo, after counselling they changed their attitude.
First we faced problems in placing the incinerator properly, later we fixed four stands and erected it firmly.
We didn’t know what to do with the ash after burning. We placed another tin under the incinerator and collected the ash in it. Later we buried it into the ground safely.

5.HOW LONG DID IT TAKE TO IMPLEMENT YOUR SOLUTION?
0-7DAYS 7-15DAYS 15-30DAYS MORE THAN 30DAYS
ANS: 15-30 DAYS

They would like to follow this idea to their schools.
3.APPROXIMATELY HOW MANY PEOPLE DID YOU SHARE YOUR STORY OF CHANGE WITH?
0-10 10-20 20-50 MORE THAN 100
Ans: more than 100
4.BRIEFLY SHARE YOUR PLAN TO SUSTAIN THE IMPACT OF YOUR PROJECT?
We formed a monitoring team.
To check the incinerator and its working condition weekly.
To advise the girls every now and then to dispose the napkins only in the incinerator not in other ways.
To have a stand by incinerator in case the original one malfunctioned.
To make it sure the ash is disposed regularly and safely.
Students are asked to report to the teacher if they faced any problem that is beyond their means in using the incinerator.
We hope that we will sustain this incinerator project well since this is conceived and carried out by us.
